English to Spanish Translation of Documents

Documents that fall into this category include confidentiality agreements, waivers, study information, program brochures, informational handouts, etc.

Spanish Transcription

Spanish audio transcribed into a document that is entirely in Spanish. This is most common when clients and/or their teams are bilingual and use the transcribed information for its intended purpose in the source language.

Spanish-English Transcripts

Spanish language interviews, focus groups, or other recordings where an English translation is required for clients and/or their team members who do not know the source language at a level which would allow them to use the Spanish transcription for its intended purpose. The translation into English is verbatim, meaning for meaning.

We value participant privacy and anonymity. Our default is to de-identify names of patients and facilities. We are responsive to the unique requirements of each project’s specifications to meet the specific guidelines of Institutional Review Boards or other regulatory bodies.

Interpretive Translation

This service is for clients who are looking for content only and do not require verbatim transcription in both the source and target language. The bilingual transcriptionist listens to the recording in Spanish and simultaneously produces a rendering of the message in English, also known as gist translation.

TRANSLATION: Good morning to everyone. Thank you very much for being here with us this morning. We are here to talk about your experiences utilizing interpreters at [name] Hospital. We want to hear from you all if our interpreters are really helping you or if we need to do more training with them before they work with you guys. Is there someone who wants to start?

PARTICIPANTE: Buenos días. Yo puedo empezar. Me llamo [nombre], y soy de Ecuador. Me mudé aquí hace dos años, y he utilizado interpretes en el hospital [nombre] en el pasado. La verdad, en mi experiencia, los interpretes son muy buenos. Yo siempre les entiendo.

TRANSLATION: Good morning. I can start. My name is [name], and I’m from Ecuador. I moved here two years ago, and I have utilized interpreters at [name] Hospital in the past. Honestly, in my experience, the interpreters are very good. I always understand them.

PARTICIPANTE: Yo diría lo mismo.

TRANSLATION: I would say the same.

Example of Interpretive Translation Versus Traditional Translation

The recorded participant says this. No me gusta cuando me manden información por el portal del hospital. Sabes, es que no soy muy buena para esas cosas de la tecnología.

The final transcript in interpretive translation format would read like this and stand alone with no Spanish transcription above. I don’t like when they send me information through the hospital portal. I’m not great with technology.

A true translation would read more like this and be placed immediately underneath the Spanish transcription. I don’t like when they send me information through the hospital portal. You know, it’s that I’m not great with those technology things.

Case Study for Spanish Translation Services

The police interviewed the defendant with an English-speaking officer and a Spanish-speaking officer. The English-speaking officer asked the questions in English. The Spanish-speaking officer translated the questions to Spanish. The defendant answered in Spanish, and the Spanish-speaking officer translated it to English. The English-speaking officer wrote the report in English. Several key details of the interview were poorly translated and eventually misstated in the officer’s report. The details of this interview became critically important late in the case when the government amended the charge.

After the prosecutor amended the charge to a charge that depended on the details of this interview, I had the video of the interview transcribed in Spanish and English by Premium Business Services. In other words, the Spanish statements were transcribed in Spanish and the English statements were transcribed in English. I reached out to the transcriptionist on Saturday, June 17. She provided me the transcript of the interview around 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 23, and I immediately turned it over to the prosecutor. The prosecutor called me just after 1:00 p.m. on Friday to tell me that the prosecution planned to dismiss the case based largely on discrepancies between what the Spanish-speaking officer thought the defendant said in the interview and what she really said.

This is a situation where a fast and accurate Spanish-English transcript made all the difference.
